The pandemic may still be ongoing, but movie theaters are seeing box office records (according to the LA Times) even with streaming reigning supreme. That’s all thanks to the release of Top Gun: Maverick. 38 years after the original Top Gun released in theaters, Tom Cruise is back in his leading role, along with Glen Powell, Danny Ramirez, and Jay Ellis, who are also Men’s Health May cover stars. The new film was so well received, in fact, it was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
In addition to Best Picture, the film also received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects. The film is up against some strong competition, including Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Whale, The Fabelmans, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Speaking to Men’s Health, Jay Ellis (known for his role on Insecure) spoke about training for the role, including 45 hours of flight training. “I’m six-foot-four, 215 pounds, played college basketball,” says Ellis. “I’m excited I can use my body and be physical in a way I haven’t got to be with some of my other work.”
Danny Ramirez went through the same training, and called it “the Tom Cruise School of Being a Badass.” In the end, the most important skill he learned was “the art of puking and rallying.”
Which is all to say: Top Gun: Maverick manages to surpass the original movie (in a big way), now with a number of new faces to make this legacy sequel one of the best big blockbusters to hit theaters in years. For anyone looking to immerse themselves in the action-packed world of Top Gun, there’s no better time than now to stream the original, and then check out the long-awaited sequel.
