• Price: When it comes to paying up for bed sheets, we like to stick to a $100-$200 rule. Be weary of sheets under $100, as most of those sets will not be very good quality. There are, however, a few bed sheets under $100 that are a good buy so don’t count our prior statement as an absolute. In fact, Amazon is the best place you can find sheets under $100 for. We’ve highlighted the very best sheet sets above we’d recommend for under $100, with brands like Mellanni, Danjure Linens, Bedsure, and Amazon Basics all providing good quality for the cost. You can also pay more than $200 for bed sheets if you want a true luxury feel. Any of the over $200 options we’ve listed above are well worth the extra investment—like the sets from Boll & Branch and Cozy Earth—as they provide a level of comfort few brand’s can achieve.

• Softness: Softness depends on content and construction of the sheet itself. Synthetic and multi-blend sheets often feel buttery soft to the touch (like rayon, lyocell, polyester, microfiber) but they can also feel a bit plastic-y and flimsy if not made of good quality. From the construction angle, soft sheets can be created through techniques like brushing or combing of a fabric (brushed cotton feels wonderfully soft when done right). You can also achieve softness through special weaves like sateen and jersey.

• Durability: Due to how all our sleeping patterns vary and how brands have their own ways of making sheets, durability is a difficult metric to measure. Painting with broad brushstrokes, consider polyester sheets to be more durable than cotton due to their shrinking, pilling, and fading. • Care: Pretty much all sheets are machine washable, and most can handle regular cycles on warm settings. To be safe though, it’s a good practice to wash on cold and on delicate, as some sheets specifically ask for that. Washing on cold is a practice that can also help extend the life of your sheets, and really the only time we consider washing on warm water is if you’re a sweaty sleeper or if you’re sheets get dirty faster than expected; washing on warm gets deeper clean on the fabric.

The GOTS has strict standards that makes sure sheets follow an organic process through the entirety of production, so you can trust a set of sheets is actually organic with this certification—as opposed to being partly organic in just one or two steps of the production process.

• Deep Pockets : You might need a deep pocket sheet set if you have a thick mattress or use a pillow top cover on top of your regular mattress. Most sheet sets can handle up to 14-inches of thickness, so if you suspect your mattress is over 14-inches then you should look at deep pocket sheets. A lot of brands carry deep pocket sheets. It’s true a lot of guys probably use a single set of sheets for their bedding, but you’re better off having at least a few sets on hand to alternate and change out every once and awhile.

• Cotton: Whether you use your extra sets as backups or for different seasons, the best fabric to start with is high-quality cotton. Pima, Egyptian, Supima, and Silk are all classic bedsheet fabrics you can have on your bed for all four seasons.

• Rayon, Viscose, Lyocell: Other types of fabric that’s a good option for all-season use (and for those who are hot sleepers) are rayon, viscose, or lyocell blend sheets. These types of sheets are made to withstand shrinking and fading, while also being cool and breathable.

• Linen: The only bed sheet fabric that’s probably not always best for year-round use is linen. The wonderfully light and breathable fabric is best suited for summer, so it’s worth having a pair of linen sheets to treat yourself to once the heat comes around. But even this rule isn’t concrete, because if you feel like you sleep well with linen all year round then do what works best for you!

It’s important to wash your sheets at least once a week. Doing this might feel like overdoing it at first but your sheets accumulate dirt, dead skin, body oils, sweat, dust mites, and more.
