The big, seasonal events traditionally see the most games discounted. During the fall promotion, for example, more than 4000 games were offered at lower prices, ranging from indie classics to current blockbusters. Between the seasonal sales, Valve plans themed promotions, including business simulations as well as pirate and ninja games in January, dinosaur and robot games in February, first-person shooters in April, or open-world survival games in May.

Game previews, also known as Next Fest, offer discounts as well as numerous demos that can be tried out for free, as well as live streams from the developers, who receive direct feedback from the community.
