California-based athleisure brand Vuori is known for high-quality activewear that’s both comfortable and practical. The brand won best everyday leggings in our 2023 Activewear Awards, and one of our commerce editors declared the Vuori Performance Jogger Pants the “softest pair of lounge pants” they’ve ever known.

Last month Vuori unveiled its newest collection: the V1 Uplift Evolve line, which promised a comfortable, stretchy fit. The top and bottom set consists of high-rise Evolve Leggings and a matching Evolve Square Neck Bra (sold separately). They’re available in four different colorways (black, pool blue, smoke, and fig) and sizes XXS through XXL, and the supersoft V1 Uplift fabric is made of 85% Polyamide and 15% Elastane. Given that we’re such big fans of the brand, we were very excited to test out the new collection (sent to us gratis) that promised a comfortable, stretchy fit.

Our writers and editors tested them during a number of activities, including yoga, working out, running, and even rock climbing. Below are the team’s honest thoughts.

This is my second time testing Vuori activewear for SELF—I tested the Daily Legging ($89) for the 2023 Activewear Awards—and this is also my second time being totally wowed by the quality, fit, and feel of this brand’s pieces. I tested the Evolve Square Neck Bra ($64) and Evolve Legging ($118) in black, and found that they fit roughly true to size for me—I’m 5’3″ and wear a medium in tops/sports bras and a small in leggings.

I wore the bra to rock climb, work out, do yoga, and go for a short run. I’m still making my mind up about the square neckline (is it just me, or is this suddenly a super common neckline for sports bras?). Its straps aren’t adjustable, and they nearly slipped off my shoulders a couple of times in the two days I tested it. It was surprisingly supportive but still puckered out in the middle when I leaned forward, which seems to be a common issue with square-neck bras for me. Where the bra really excelled was its fabric. It’s so, so smooth and is just thick enough to add a bit of security without feeling stifling. A lot of sports bras tend to chafe my underarm skin if I wear them for too long (I have sensitive pits!), but I didn’t have that issue here.

The leggings, which I wore for a workout and yoga session, are made of the same luxurious fabric as the bra, and have that same supportive but not confining feel. Out of the bag they looked like they’d be too small, and they felt pretty compressive while I was pulling them on. Once I started moving around, however, they felt like a second skin. They didn’t pinch or dig into my body anywhere, and seemed to have an unlimited amount of stretch. I was also really happy with how high-waisted they are: They fully cover my belly button but don’t encroach on the bottom hem of my sports bra. They don’t have pockets, a drawstring, mesh panels, or any other cool athleisure-y features, but that kind of makes me like them more—they’re smooth, sleek, and not without some fun Catwoman vibes. —Sara Coughlin, senior commerce writer

Here’s the lay of the land: I’m 5’4″ and typically wear medium tops/bras and a large in bottoms. I’d never actually worn Vuori anything, despite watching its sizes sell out quickly at Nordstrom while writing about sales for SELF. However, I have tested a ton of different leggings from many brands (Girlfriend Collective, Lululemon, Nike, Brooks, Aerie, you name it).

I was a little skeptical when both the Evolve Square Neck Bra and Leggings arrived in size medium, but Vuori’s fabric is a blend of stretchy, soft, and supportive that I’ve not experienced before (and makes it easier to wear than some more constrictive medium-size pairs). The material is almost slippery to the touch, and pulling them on is like literally sliding into them. I very much appreciated that I didn’t have to fight my way into the two pieces, which cannot be said for a lot of leggings I’ve tested in the past. The set was fitted without being too tight, and it was comfy enough to wear around the house. I felt cute and loved the stormy blue color—a nice change from my all-black and all-olive-green activewear! The leggings hit right above my ankle, and they have a raw cut at the bottom, which I think helps make them easier to pull on (but might also make them a tad more susceptible to fraying). The bra fit perfectly, though I wished the straps were adjustable in case it stretches out over time.

I wore the set to an intense yoga class, but here’s where I made my mistake: Because my panty lines were so visible through the leggings, I ditched my underwear. Bad idea. I sweat profusely, and by the end of the class, I had a giant dark stain around my crotch. I ended up walking home with my jacket “casually” arranged around my waist. I think even with underwear, that sweat might’ve shown. Overall, I super loved the set, but if you’re someone who sweats a lot, maybe opt for the black colorway (or stick to light activities, or maybe, you know, wear underwear). —Malia Griggs, commerce editor

This was my first time trying out the Vuori brand, and I have to say: I’m a fan. As I took the set out of the packaging, I was instantly into the fabric’s texture; it felt so smooth and soft. I tested the Evolve Square Neck Bra in Smoke ($64) and Evolve Legging also in Smoke ($118). I’m 5’3″ and I normally wear a size XS. I tried both pieces in XS and they fit like a dream. Although the straps are not adjustable (which might pose a problem for some people), they rest comfortably on my shoulders, even as I move about.

I tested this set on a mile-and-a-half run on a chillier day. While I wore a light jacket over the sports bra, the leggings were warm enough without making me feel sweaty toward the end of my run. I did wish that the pants had a pocket, as I often run with my phone and need somewhere secure to store it.

I retested this set during a deep stretch yoga session, and I was able to move freely without having to stop and pull and tug at one part or another. I noticed that each piece stayed put, which helped me to retain my confidence throughout the (very large) group activity. The high waist is low enough to not interfere with the sports bra during seated poses but high enough to provide some coverage. This set surpassed my expectations, and the high-quality material really lived up to the brand’s promise. —Alexandra Jane, associate social media manager

Working at SELF means I get to try a lot of new activewear…so frankly, I’m shocked at how much I love this set. I’m 5’5″ and have a 27/28 waist with thicker thighs. The leggings fit perfectly and will definitely be my new go-to. It’s typically hard to find a pair of leggings that are soft and body-hugging but still sweat-wicking and technical. I’ve found that performance-centric tights usually aren’t comfy enough for my yoga and Pilates sessions, but softer pairs end up sagging at the crotch or making me overheat. These bottoms are the perfect combination. The waist is super high, never rolls, and the material is heavenly for any activity. The sports bra is one of my favorite cuts (I love a double strap and hate a racerback, which usually feels like it’s destroying my neck). I have very medium-size boobs (I’m a 34D and am wearing the medium here), and this bra supported me just fine for low-impact activities. I also just really liked the look of it. If you have larger breasts or prefer more coverage, the top might not be for you. That said, I’d like to trade in my overflowing leggings drawer for a few more pairs of these, please. —Hannah Pasternak, associate director of special projects

After hearing such great things about Vuori, I was excited to try out its latest set. I’m 5’2″ and I usually wear a size medium for a looser fit. According to Vuori’s sizing guide, I was a size small, so I went with the brand’s recommendations. I immediately thought I had made a mistake when I took the set out of the bag—everything looked so tiny in the packaging. But they fit surprisingly well thanks to the super-stretchy material. Leggings often feel really constricting or bunch up at the ankles, but I didn’t have any problems with these. I was also hesitant about the sports bra because of the nonadjustable straps, but they stayed put while I went about my day and ran errands. All in all, this Vuori was a perfect fit. The quality material and minimalist design and nice color make me excited to keep wearing it this spring. —Jenifer Calle, senior commerce editor
